OZIL NOT GOOD ENOUGH – MERSON

Arsenal lost 2-1 at Goodison Park, a result which leaves them third in the Premier League and six points behind leaders Chelsea, and Merson feels Ozil could have done more to prevent Ashley Williams heading in from a corner late on . Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “He [Ozil] was cowering as the ball came in and he literally ran away from it. “That’s not good enough. That doesn’t win you league titles. He doesn’t even need to win it. Just a little nudge could have been enough to put Ashley Williams off but he gave up.

Benzema In Sex Scandal Probe

The Real Madrid striker, 28, remains under investigation with regards an alleged blackmail attempt on France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena, 32, and a lawyer involved in the defence for this case had hoped the investigation would crumble if this appeal was upheld.  The case exploded into the public consciousness over a year ago, whenBenzema was taken into police custody and charged with conspiracy to blackmail the Lyon midfielder, who initially filed a complaint in June 2015. Benzema was placed under judicial supervision, which means he is prohibited from meeting with Valbuena or any other people charged in the case. Defence lawyer Sylvain Cormier has always protested the player’s innocence, stating in November 2015: “Karim Benzema will show his good faith in this affair – as soon as possible, I hope,” Cormier announced.

Syrian TV: Aleppo evacuation suspended, rebels opened fire on convoy

BEIRUT –  The Syrian government suspended evacuations from eastern Aleppo just hours after they resumed on Friday, saying that rebels had opened fire on a convoy of evacuees at a crossing point with the enclave, state TV reported. It wasn't immediately clear how long the suspension would last or whether it would delay the cease-fire deal under which tens of thousands of residents and rebel fighters are being evacuated to opposition-controlled areas in the surrounding countryside, a process likely to take several days. Earlier on Friday, as the evacuations resumed for a second day, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a major new Syria peace initiative, saying he and his Turkish counterpart are working to set up peace talks between Damascus and the opposition in Kazakhstan. The evacuations seal the end of the Syrian rebels' most important stronghold — the eastern part of the city of Aleppo — and mark a watershed moment in the country's civil war, now in its

How Senate rejected Magu as EFCC chairman

The rejection of Ibrahim Magu’s nomination as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission marked the end of months of delay by the Senate to act on President Muhammadu Buhari’s request. The Presidency requested the Senate to confirm Mr. Magu’s nomination in July through a letter signed by Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo in his capacity as the acting president when Mr. Buhari was away on a medical trip. However, since the letter was read by Senate President Bukola Saraki on July 14, the Senate showed no readiness to act on it until last week. After failing to hold the confirmation hearing last week, the Senate said it would screen Mr. Magu today, Thursday. But indications that Mr. Magu would face difficulties emerged Thursday morning during a meeting of the Senate leadership ahead of the plenary. There was disagreement over the mode of the screening. While some Senators were for an open screening of Mr. Magu at plenary, some were opposed to it, saying the EFC
