The
accident occurred at about 9.30 pm. when the NPP supporters flooded the streets
to jubilate over the victory of their party and the declaration of Nana Addo
Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President-elect of Ghana in the general election.
Eyewitness account
An
eyewitness told the Daily Graphic, "When we heard of Nana's victory,
everyone came out to jubilate. While jubilating, we positioned ourselves well
for cars to pass."
"But
this particular Kia truck overtook a car in front of it and ran into the crowd
and knocked down many people. It reversed and ran into the crowd again as
though he premeditated it," he narrated.
A
victim of the accident, Linda Quaye, narrated that while jubilating on the
street after hearing of President Mahama's concession, they suddenly saw the
Kia truck speeding towards them.
The
vehicle ran into them, she said, adding, "It went back and again sped into
us. I quickly stood up and moved away after the first knock, I would have been
dead by now," she said.
Arrest
The
Suhum District Police Commander, Superintendent Muchiraru Yahaya, confirmed the
incident and said the driver of the Kia truck had been arrested and was
currently in custody.
He
said the bodies of the two who died on the spot had been conveyed to the Suhum
Government Hospital morgue while the 22 injured victims were receiving medical
attention at the same hospital.
The
Member of Parliament (MP) of the area, Mr Frederick Opare Ansah, last Saturday
visited the victims on admission at the hospital, as well as the homes of the
deceased to mourn with their families.
He
urged the victims and eyewitnesses to assist the police in their effort to let
the law take its course.
