A newborn girl was,
on Saturday, found floating in a well at Gwallameji, the students’ village of
the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, the Bauchi State capital.
This is the second
incidence in less than one week.
A dog was found by
passers-by feasting on a new born baby abandoned at a refuse dump last Sunday
in the same area.
The baby girl found
inside the well on Saturday afternoon was believed to have been dumped a day
before she was discovered.
An eyewitness, who
gave his name as Elkamcy, told Punch that the odour from the decomposing body
of the baby attracted residents.
“On my way to my
shop, I saw many people gathered by an abandoned well in the area. It caught my
attention and when I got there, I saw the baby floating inside the well.
“We called the
traditional leader, who came with the local chief. They called the police, took
pictures and asked some of the boys around to remove the baby. Afterwards, she
was buried few meters away from there,” he stated.
The eyewitness, who
described the development as painful, said this was the fourth of such incident
this year.
The Police Public
Relations Officer, Bauchi State Police Command, Haruna Mohammed, could not be
reached as his telephone line was unavailable.
