The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) has
re-strategised its approach in assisting government in tackling the monster of
youth unemployment in the country.
Governor Aminju Bello Masari of Katsina
State, who revealed this at the swearing-in of 2016 Batch ‘B’ 2705 corps
members deployed to the state in the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Katsina
on Monday, hailed the new strategy of the scheme to meet the needs of youths as
innovative and creative.
Represented by his special adviser on youth
Development, Ibrahim Khalil Aminu, the governor pointed out that the NYSC
management had expanded the scope of skills acquisition and entrepreneurship
development for both in-camp and post-camp training and the duration of the
in-camp training.
“The posture of the scheme goes to show that
it is ever ready to assist government in handling the ugly monster of youth
unemployment. My administration shall continue to provide avenue and facilities
for both in-camp and post-camp training. It is my fervent prayer that corps
members deployed to the state will avail themselves of this uncommon gesture of
government,” he said.
He also gave assurance that government had
directed security operatives to ensure water-tight security within the camp and
indeed in all parts of the state for the security of all in the state.
“You should therefore relax your minds and
concentrate on the activities in camp and get the best out of the orientation
course,” he added.
In his speech, the NYSC state coordinator,
Mr. John Okpo, disclosed that the 1611 male and 1094 female corps members
registered for this service year in the camp represented the highest number
ever posted to the state.
According to him, greater attention would be
laid on skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development during the
orientation period to enable the youths imbibe skills for their expected role
as future leaders.
His words, “This is a deliberate effort in
the NYSC to expose all of you to various skill areas for you to choose
one or two skills that will make you self reliant thereby assisting in the
economic development of the country.”
Okpo however warned that the objective of the
orientation course might not be fully achieved if the youths did not carefully
participate in all the camp’s activities.
