Justice
Mamman Nasir, former Court of Appeal President and District Head of Malumfashi
in Katsina State, has called for community partnership initiatives to ensure
safety on Nigerian roads.
Nasir made this call on Monday
when a team of the Federal Road Safety Corps, led by Assistant Corps Marshal
Bulus Darwan, visited him in his palace.
The
traditional head, who pledged his support for the FRSC, also described
collective community efforts as an effective measure for safety on the roads.
He called
for collective efforts among all road users to achieve the desired result in
safeguarding people’s lives and property.
The
traditional ruler enjoined the FRSC officials to always interact with community
groups for good understanding and relationship about their activities.
Nasir
lauded the commission’s efforts for conducting periodic enlightenment campaigns
and displaying of posters on the roads as safety precautions to save lives and
property.
He added
that the cordial relationships the FRSC enjoyed from communities, state and
local governments, sister agencies needed to be reciprocated by the commission.
Responding,
Darwan, who is in charge of Zone 1, Kaduna, cautioned road users against
overloading and dangerous driving, which he described as major causes of road
accidents.
Durwan
reiterated the commission’s commitment to ensure accident free roads in the
country and stressed the importance of collective efforts among all road users
to achieve the desired result.
He noted
that the commission initiated various measures such as patrol, sensitization
campaigns, educative talks on vehicle condition, speed limits, overloading and
other measures aimed at checking motorists.
Durwan
described the zone as an area with numerous road networks, linking places,
adding that the statistics of road accidents recorded from the area in the past
were worrisome.
He further
appealed to communities not to take laws into their hands by mounting
indiscriminate speed bumps, using items as wood and metallic substances which
could be dangerous.
The FRSC
official urged the communities to liaise with the Ministry of Works to provide
them with legitimate speed bumps according to standard specifications.
Speaking
also, Alhaji Datti Ningi, the Leader of Malumfashi Concerned Citizens on Road
Safety, urged drivers to ensure proper condition of vehicle wipers, lighting
system, good tyres and others at all times.
Ningi
lauded the commission for introducing speed limit device and the introduction
of the mobile courts to try erring drivers, noting that the measures would
reduced accidents on the roads.
The
Malumfashi Unit Commander of FRSC, Garba Yusuf, also lauded community leaders,
road transport workers unions and other stakeholders on their efforts towards
safeguarding people’s lives and property.
The event
was attended by different groups in the zone comprising of Kaduna, Kano,
Katsina and Jigawa States.
